Why do fans have 3 blades used in India , while US'fans have 4 or 5 blades...

CEILING FANS

Upon arriving home on a hot sunny day, whether from work, school or gym, one of the first things that your body craves for is-absolutely a chill air showering and patting your whole body. At that time you just switch on the fan and get yourself comfortable and fresh.
Ceiling fans does not generate air, they actually increased the air movement. Due to this our body sweat evaporates and so it takes away some of the body heat, thus we feel cool. But did you know, why it has three blades more often ?

FAN having one blade:

It is not possible to have a fan with only one blade, because fans need symmetry or balanced rotation to work properly. But still you will find single bladed fans online, these fans are not able to drag air as much as 3 bladed fan. So this fans are more suitable for chilly weather areas.

FAN having two blades:

We should know three important facts about ceiling fans:
1. Inside angles of the fan should be always 360/N, where N is no. of blades of the fan to keep the
    fan balanced.
2. All the blades should be of same size, length and thickness.
3. The most important fact is inclined angles of fan should not exceed 90 degree or nearby it, which
    achieve better drag to air.

Fan having two blades did not support the last fact, as they have inside angles of 180 degree.
They are generally used in small room and in the places having cool climate.

 FAN having three blades:

3 blade fans are commonplace in market of fans. it has 120 degree of inside angle b/w blades. This type of fan is more efficient in providing adequate air drag with less power consumption. The research found that adding more blades does not necessarily improve performance and may actually make it worse by creating more aerodynamic drag on the motor. They stated that greater numbers of blades are usually added for styling purposes.

Again one of the most important factor to choose 3 bladed fans over others is
the cost efficiency. As the cost of the fan may increase with the increase in no.
of blades and also they will give better performance as compared to more than
3 bladed fans.

US electricity frequency is 60 Hz while in India we produce 50 Hz electricity and RPM of fan is proportional to frequency. Due to warm climate in India we need more RPM of fan. So, by considering low frequency, it is important to keep weight of fan as less as possible. Therefore in order to reduce its weight, we manufacture 3 blade fan.

FAN having four and five blades:

If a fan have 4 or more blades then they will obviously increase the weight of fan as a result the fan will move slowly as compared to the fans having less no. of blades.

Why do US mostly use fans having 4 or more blades ?

Generally some countries like US have cool type of climate, so they mostly prefer fans with 4 or 5 blades.  Now the reason why American fans have 4/5 blades is because they don’t really need high speed fan as they do have an Air Conditioner working. Fans with 4 / 5 blades are usually slower. Also, these fans generally have a maximum of 3 speed settings. We should also consider the fact that Americans are very particular with their comfort level and so they use such fans even if they have to spend more money on that. Unlike US large no. of people in India are not able to buy such fans due to their high costs.
